Headline inflation climbed to 3.7% in September, driven predominantly by surging energy costs as oil averaged near $98 per barrel, while core CPI registered at 2.6%. Treasury yields appear to have largely discounted a peak in headline inflation, aligning with broader economic growth tracking between 2% and 3% alongside baseline inflation around 2.5%, which fundamentally supports a 10-Year Treasury yield near 5%. If energy prices stabilize or drop following the upcoming election, that relief could serve as a key catalyst for an equity market rally, though international fiscal and political friction in France remains a notable wildcard.

Beneath the macro surface, equity markets are navigating technical turbulence as the S&P 500 tests its short-term trend while attempting to reclaim its 50-day moving average, and small caps (IWM) have broken sharply below their 200-day moving average. Concurrently, the sharp run-up in interest rates has heavily impacted income-generating assets—such as emerging market debt, closed-end funds, business development companies, and REITs—driving valuations down to levels that appear fundamentally overextended. Opportunities are emerging in oversold areas: Consumer Discretionary and semiconductor shares are establishing technical support, and the broader artificial intelligence buildout is transitioning into a midcycle phase where disciplined positioning favors core holdings such as Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOG), Broadcom (AVGO), and ON Semiconductor (ON).
